Masaka Resource Centre for the Blind (MRCB)
Overview
The Masaka Resource Centre for the Blind (MRCB) is the dedicated training and rehabilitation facility established by the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB). It serves as a vital bridge for visually impaired Rwandans, helping them transition from isolation to independence through specialized education and skills development.
Who We Serve
The center welcomes a diverse group of beneficiaries with varying needs, including:
- The Isolated: Individuals who have previously been confined to their homes or feel downcast, seeking the confidence to reintegrate into society.
- Students: People preparing to return to formal education who need foundational skills before entering mainstream schools.
- Job Seekers: Visually impaired persons looking for formal employment who require assistive devices or specific professional training.
Our Programs
The MRCB offers intensive courses designed to equip daily living and academic skills. Key focus areas include:
- Braille Literacy: We provide intensive courses in Braille, essential for those needing to get back to school or access written materials.
- Rehabilitation: We offer support for those who have lost their sight, helping them adjust to their new reality and navigate the world independently.
- Assistive Technology & Devices: We assist members in accessing and learning to use the devices necessary for employment and education.
Our Needs & Future Goals
The demand for training at MRCB is growing. We are seeing an increase in applicants ranging from those seeking employment to those simply wishing to leave their homes. To meet this demand effectively, we are focused on:
- Infrastructure: Developing more permanent structures to accommodate the increasing number of trainees.
- Sustainable Funding: Securing consistent support to maintain these intensive training courses, which are currently limited by project-based funding.
